The SiMBiT consortium is built up of a very diverse but well-balanced interdisciplinary team, which encompasses competences in all needed knowledge fields and in all different steps of the value chain. It’s composed of 8 technical partners, 6 academic structures and 2 companies, support for the management and dissemination by a consulting firm.

CSGI is an Italian public research organization under the supervision and control of the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific Research (MIUR). Since 1995 the scientific activities of CSGI have been focused on basic research and development of high-tech new processes, also supporting the R&D activities of small and medium enterprises. The University of Bari Unit of CSGI includes researchers and facilities of the Chemistry and Physics Departments. The available expertise includes organic electronics, bioelectronics, optoelectronics, tailoring of surfaces, sensors and biosensors, soft matter, and analytical sciences especially in in the field of organic and flexible bio-electronics.

Role in the SiMBiT project:

The University of Bari Unit of CSGI led the setting of the project and now coordinate the consortium and the R&D activities. As technical partner, the University of Bari Unit of CSGI will be the single sensor technology provider and will develop the bio-functionalized array of gates.

The University Hospital Duesseldorf (UKD) belongs to the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich-Heine-University of Duesseldorf (UDUS) and is one of the most important medical centre in the western part of Germany and the largest provider of medical services within Duesseldorf. The Institute of Pathology is a major department of the UKD providing histopathologic, cytologic and molecular-pathological diagnostic to all departments of the UKD, but also to other hospitals and private practices in the area. The Institute of Pathology is involved in many clinical studies and in the development of interdisciplinary guidelines for diagnostic and therapy of different tumour entities. Importantly, the Institute of Pathology, is one of the leading departments in Germany for the diagnostic of pancreatic and biliary neoplasia.

Role in SiMBiT project:

UDUS will realise the clinical study using SiMBiT prototype to test the diagnostic accuracy and the advantages of SiMBiT in terms of enhanced sensitivity, possibility of multi-parametric analysis, time and costs in a clinical scenario.

The Università degli Studi di Brescia (UNIBS) (University of Brescia) is a research and high education Italian institution funded in 1982 by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. UNIBS is made up of eight departments in the areas of Medicine, Engineering, Economics, and Law. From 2013 UNIBS focused the activities on health and wealth of people in the surrounding environment, through the integration of cultural and scientific areas, which are the hallmark of the University, and the collaboration with national and international partners working in the health, economic-industrial and socio-institutional fields. In the last three years UNIBS developed several high-level of technology research and development labs shared by the Departments of Medicine and Engineering. Among then, of particular interest for this project are the Tissue Engineering Laboratory, Advanced Prototyping Laboratory, Preventive and Personalized Medicine Laboratory, Environment, Health and Sustainability Laboratory, and Agro-Food laboratory.

Role in SiMBiT project:

UniBS will develop new numerical and analytical models and fundamental analysis tools for the comprehensive understanding and design of bio-functionalized electrolyte-gated transistors and systems. It will also develop the array of gates.

ÅboAkademi University, the Boundary breaking university, celebrated it’s 100-year anniversary in 2018. One of ÅboAkademi’s focus areas in research is Molecular Process and Material Technology, where cross-disciplinary research in advanced processes and materials technology explores future possibilities in developing advanced materials and technologies for biomedical research. At the core of these activities is The Center for Functional Materials (FUNMAT, which is a research center in functional materials based at ÅboAkademi University. The research goals within the Center for Functional Materials has been to create and demonstrate new functionalities for future interactive products by combining advanced chemistry and complex materials with printing technologies.

Role in SiMBiT project:

ABO will develop better understanding of the complex device physics of the sensor structure. ABO will explore new materials and structures and provide physical insight into the operation of the based on the developed stable sensors operating in the electrolyte.

Fondazione IstitutoItaliano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology, IIT) is a scientific research center established by Italian law in 2003 in order to promote excellence in both basic and applied research, and to facilitate national economic development. IIT scientific activities started in 2006 with a very strong approach to technology transfer. Currently IIT is conducting its new scientific plan (2018-2023) developing 4 strategic research domains: Robotics, Nanomaterials, Technologies for Life Science, and Computational Sciences. The main goal is to produce technologies that will have a positive impact on some important societal challenges, such as sustainability and the environment, healthcare and aging society, also reflecting EU priorities.

Role in SiMBiT project:

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologiaparticipation to the project will be through the research line “Printed and Molecular Electronics” (PME), led by Dr. Mario Caironi, which is active since 2010 at the IIT Center for Nano Science and Technology (CNST) in Milan.IIT will fabricate arrays of sensors based on electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EG-TFTs) with large-area compatible processes, combining printing and laser writing techniques.

The Eindhoven University of Technology plays a prominent role at both national and international level through its research and educational programs in the engineering science and technology domain. The team participating to SiMBiT is the Mixed Signal Microelectronics (MSM) group of the faculty of Electric Engineering. This group research focuses on the architectural and circuit level design of sensor and communications front-end, data converter and wireless communication systems, exploiting both Silicon and emerging technologies.

Role in SiMBiT project:

Technische Universiteit Eindhoven will be the leader for the design of the SiMBiT system and its modules. TUE will participate of the fabrication of the modules and the integration in prototypes.

FlexEnable has pioneered an industrially-proven organic transistor technology platform for flexible displays and sensors. Its unique technology allows electronics to be manufactured on flexible plastic film, the thickness of a sheet of paper. It combines stable, high performance organic thin-film transistors (OTFT) with passive elements to create truly flexible and cost-effective electronics over large and small surfaces. This has led to the successful volume production of thin, lightweight and robust backplanes for flexible displays and sensors.Building on more than 15 years of in-depth know-how and patents, FlexEnable offers a comprehensive range of services-based packages for its technology platform. Through our established partnership models, we are playing a central role in developing the efficient supply chains necessary for truly flexible, large area and low-cost electronics.

Role in SiMBiT project:

FlexEnable will be developing a cost-effective manufacturable process based on bio-functionalized electrolyte-gated transistors associated with systems. This process will enable fast commercial offering of the bioelectronic devices and sub-systems.

MASMEC S.p.A. is a SME specialized in precision technology, robotics and mechatronics, applied to the automotive and biomedical sectors. For over 30 years MASMEC has been designing and building custom automatic machines for component assembly and testing for world leader manufacturers in the automotive field: examples are injector assembly lines, clutch assembly and test machines, valve assembly and test systems. For each machine MASMEC oversees all phases of development: from design and software engineering to assembly, installation and training. Moreover, MASMEC in the last 15 years applied its know-how also to the biomedical sector, developing hi-tech devices, such as medical navigation systems for interventional procedures and robotized workstations for DNA and RNA extraction and biotech applications.

Role in SiMBiT project:

MASMEC will be the leader for the definition of the SiMBiT bio-electronic sensing system specifications. The companywill conduct experiments to prove that the final SiMBiT prototype can perform according to specifications.

Created in 1997, Efficient Innovation is a French consulting company specialised in the field of innovation management with a vision of the whole innovation value chain, from opportunities generation with strategic creativity, to concept transformation into innovation projects, market studies and opportunities building, funding of the innovation projects through direct and indirect funds for companies. EFFICIENT is specialist in European framework programmes since FP5, FP6, FP7 and has built up many European projects.

Role in SiMBiT project:

EFFICIENT will bring its expertise in marketing studies and opportunities building to build up the business plans of industrials for further exploitation of the results. EFFICIENT will have dissemination activities in website building, brochure and poster design. EFFICIENT will assist CSGI in its role of Project Coordinator with taking day-to-day tasks of European project management and communication with European Project Officer, Financial Officer and Legal Officer, and also follow-up of all deliveries, attending Executive Board and Deliverables Review Team.
